When I started looking at home audio systems, I quickly realised that choosing speakers was only part of the decision. I also had to decide how I wanted to power them.

Why I Might Choose an Integrated Amplifier

Space is another important factor.

Do Separates Always Sound Better?
This is where I think it is easy to get confused.
More components do not automatically mean better sound.
A well-matched integrated amplifier can sound excellent. A poorly matched separates system can sound disappointing.
The quality of the individual components, the compatibility between the amplifier and speakers, the room, and speaker placement can all have a major impact on the final result.
Even manufacturers and audio specialists generally agree that a good integrated amplifier is enough for many listeners, while separates become more compelling when flexibility, fine-tuning, and maximum system performance become priorities.
So I would not buy separates simply because I assume they are automatically superior.
I would buy them because I actually need the flexibility they provide.
I Also Need to Think About My Speakers
Before choosing an amplifier, I would look carefully at my speakers.
I would check their impedance, sensitivity, recommended amplifier power, and overall design.
This is especially important with larger floorstanding speakers.
A powerful amplifier is not automatically the right amplifier. What matters is whether the amplifier can properly control and drive the speakers in my room and at the listening levels I actually use.
This is why I would choose the speakers and amplifier as a system rather than looking at amplifier wattage alone.
If my speakers are relatively easy to drive and my room is moderate in size, a good integrated amplifier may give me everything I need.
If I have large speakers, a bigger room, or want to listen at higher levels, I may have a stronger reason to consider separates.
So, Which Setup Is Right for Me?
I would make the decision based on five simple questions.
Do I want a simple system?
If yes, I would start with an integrated amplifier.
Do I have limited space?
If yes, an integrated amplifier is usually easier to live with.
Do I want to upgrade individual components over time?
If yes, separates become more attractive.
Do I have large or demanding speakers?
If yes, I would pay closer attention to dedicated power amplification.
Do I enjoy building and tuning my audio system?
If yes, separates may give me the flexibility I am looking for.
My Final Take
After looking at both approaches, I don't think the decision should come down to “integrated versus separates—which one is more audiophile?”
That is the wrong question.
For me, an integrated amplifier makes the most sense when I want strong performance, simple operation, fewer components, and good value.
Separates make more sense when I want maximum flexibility, greater upgrade potential, and more control over every part of my system.
If I am building my first home audio system, I would start by choosing the right speakers and understanding my room. Then I would choose an amplifier that matches those speakers instead of buying equipment simply because it looks more advanced.
The best home audio system is not the one with the most boxes. It is the one that fits the way I actually listen to music.
Whether that means a clean, powerful integrated amplifier or a carefully matched system of separates, the goal is the same: build a system that makes me want to sit down, turn up the volume, and listen.
